Deciduous shrub, up to 3 m tall. Stem erect, branched, young branches purple, puberulent. Leaves foetid when bruised, alternate; petiole 4-10 mm long; leaf blade 2-10 cm x 0.5-2 cm, elliptic or lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, margin entire and wavy, base cuneate, apex acute to acuminate. Inflorescence terminal or axillary panicle, congested. Flowers subsessile with pedicels 1-2(-6) mm long, pubescent, yellow or greenish yellow, 1.5-2 cm long and 1-1.2 cm across, actinomorphic, bisexual, 5-merous, hypogynous; bracts linear-lanceolate, caducous. Calyx tubular- funnelform, ca. 6 mm long, puberulent; tube 5-5.5 mm long; lobes 5, 1 mm long, +/- deltoid, persistent, green tinged with purple. Corolla 2-2.5 cm long and 1-1.2 cm across, tubular; tube 1.6-2 cm long, narrow at base, dilated towards apex and slightly constricted at throat, dark yellow or bronze coloured outside; limb 5- or 6-lobed, lobes +/- oblong, ca. 4-5 mm x 3 mm, abaxially puberulent, spreading or slightly reflexed, apex obtuse or emarginate. Stamens 5, inserted in distal part of corolla tube, included; free part of filaments 6-7 mm long, dilated and pubescent in lower adnate part, not appendaged; anthers small, +/- oblong or ovate, 0.5-1 mm long, dehiscing longitudinally. Ovary small, 2-locular, many ovules per loculus, placentas swollen, axile placentation; style ca. 1.6 cm long, filiform; stigma capitate, obscurely 2-lobed. Fruit a berry, +/- globose or ovoid, ca. 1 cm in diameter, glossy black. Seeds black, triangular, ca. 2 mm long and 2.5 mm broad at base, warty.
